Mac OS X Tiger: Dynamic Dictionary

Posted by Zachary Krakov  Published in Mac Tips & Tricks, Quick Key Commands

This quick little key command allows you to view a dynamic popup dictionary as you scroll over any word displayed in any built-in application shipping with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.x). CMD + CTRL + D will popup a quick contextual menu that displays the Oxford Dictionary definition of the word. So, for instance:

CMD + CTRL + D

Pressing Command + Control + D (all at the same time) while scrolling over text with your mouse will give you the following result in Safari:
Dictionary Screen Shot

This is a great little quick key command when you’re browsing a web site and don’t know the definition for a word in an article, or when you’re reading an email and someone wants to use one of those $2 words. So far, I’ve verified that this quick key command works in the following applications with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.x):

  • Safari (v2)
  • Mail (v2.0.1)

If you find any more applications that support the dynamic dictionary, please let me know, or comment about the applications you find. Thanks!
